
Sad news from across the pond where donated classics are being turned down by school libraries - too hard for the YA's to read! Oh, heavy sigh from a dedicated librarian who thinks recreational reading and school assigned reading should not necessarily be the same thing.
What happened to us? Why is what we want necessarily what we need? The "Give them what they want" mentality in libraries works against our mission, doesn't it? Or does it... Talk amongst yourselves on this one.

I think the difference is that in school they give students TESTS about what they are required to read.
At libraries, a child can read for pleasure. They can take away any understanding that speaks to them personally and remember their favorites always. Reading is life transforming at libraries. No test required.
